Start-up - An educational program embedded within a residential counseling program

A non-profit organization specialized in helping women recover from addiction through a residential program with intensive counseling. The organization's leaders quickly became aware that many of these women were mothers with young children, and they needed also to provide services for the children. They then discovered a need for the same type of addiction-recovery program for older children and teens.

The organization's clients could not be treated as outpatients, or as daily visitors. They needed to be removed from their environments and influences for the counseling to work. However, the children could not miss so much school, or they would be unlikely ever to return to formal education. In addition, many had already missed large amounts of schooling because of their or their parents' addiction.

I advised the group on how to set up an educational program which would meet both the educational and counseling needs of the young people, and would receive the necessary local and state approvals. I showed them likely costs and helped them draw up a budget so that they could fund it appropriately, including applying for external funding assistance. I also advised them on program design and implementation, and importantly on teacher recruitment. Most importantly, I assisted them in creating a position profile and person profile for the program leaership.
